What to wear to your newborn session

Now that your session is booked & you’re on the cusp of welcoming your brand new babe in to the world. It’s such an exciting time for your family! I know you are working on putting together the last details of the nursery, getting the start of the baby clothes washed, & the last of the essentials you need. Likely also trying to figure out what you & your family are going to wear for your newborn session.

Start with mom.

You’re not going to feel 100% like yourself during this session & give yourself grace for that! You had a brand new baby & it is a true feat in itself. What I always recommend is wearing flowy, not body forming, not tight to your body clothing. Things that hang with some slack give a relaxed fit for you help you feel more comfortable. However keep in mind you don’t want something that gives you extra in the midsection. Dresses like maxi dresses & shirts that have more flow than a maternity top can give.

Don’t choose anything that requires you to constantly adjust, pull down, or pull up for coverage. Soft or neutral colors tend to also be the most flattering as well as black for you, but also don’t take away from the focus on your new little one. Also don’t stress about shoes, barefoot is way better in photos than shoes but 99% of the time your feet won’t be in it.

A few of my favorite places for outfits for newborn sessions are the places you love to shop already! Target, Roolee, Lulus & Wren & Ivory

Coordinate colors don’t match them. No all blacks or all white.

Everyone in the same color means there is no texture & no personality which produces a very flat looking image. Some important things to know white can easily blow out your image making you washed out. Whereas being in all black it can cause clipping causing loss of detail to your images.

Choose patterns for everyone wisely.

Don’t fear them, just put thought into the scheme of everyone’s outfits. While you don’t want everyone in patterns pairing one of your kiddos in a similar pattern to a parent is a definitely plus! Even a button up shirt with patterns that have similar colors to the remainder of everyone’s outfits is an excellent choice!

No shirts with large branding, graphic tees or characters.

Characters or branding on clothing really distracts from the individuals in your photos. The focus of your images should be on you & your family.

Find ways to add texture with layers & accessories.

Depending on the size of your family 1-2 should have some texture in their outfits. This can be something like a lace dress, or lace details on a dress, linen shirt or pants, a scarf, necklaces, anything you name it to bring in texture. It helps eliminate your images looking flat!

Dressing your newborn.

The easiest part of your session! I mentioned this in the guide, but it isn’t necessary to purchase outfits. Honestly a clean white onesie is hands down one of my favorite outfits for newborns. I provide the swaddles, headbands & hats! So no need to purchase any of that.

I know you have so much on your plate. Thinking about what to wear to your newborn session can be overwhelming. My hope is that this helps you narrow clothing choices down, you find items that make you feel comfortable, confident & gorgeous because you are. Choosing outfits for your newborn session If you find yourself in a pinch you just give me a shout!
